Addressing Your Concerns:
Won’t My Competition See My Pricing?
I Don’t Have Set Prices / I Create A Custom Package for Each Project
Pricing is undoubtedly a controversial topic in the creative world at the moment, particularly amongst service providers. Should we include transparent pricing on websites? Should we maintain some level of mystery? For most creators this is a very valid concern. Allow me to share a straightforward opinion on this matter…
PUT THE PRICING ON YOUR WEBSITE, DARNIT.
While my tone is coming on a little strong, the rationale is both practical and essential. Let’s delve into the reasons behind this stance.
In a world where filters and fancy tech are everywhere, people are fed up with smoke and mirrors. They’re hungry for honesty and directness. By withholding pricing information, you risk appearing elusive or even distrustful to potential clients seeking clarity.
Imagine you’re the client.
You land on a website, you like what you see, and then… crickets. No prices.
You’re left with two not-so-great options: you either bounce off the site, assuming you can’t afford it, or you summon the courage to inquire, hoping you won’t get sticker shock. It’s like stepping into a social minefield, and let’s be real—that’s not fun for anyone.
Yet another advantage of providing transparent pricing on your website is the ability to, essentially, prequalify potential clients purely through the value of information. All you have to do is include your service prices, and your website does the rest as soon as your potential clients navigate onto your pricing page.
This effectively weeds out all the bargain hunters and price-check emails you’ve been wading through and leaves real potential clients. Those genuinely interested and committed will engage with your inquiry form, armed with the understanding of your pricing structure. This effectively filters out casual inquiries, streamlining your engagement with serious prospects. Anyone who is filling out your inquiry form after seeing the cost knows that knows they can afford you, feels confident in your skills, and is excited to work with you!
Transparent pricing allows your ideal clients to budget effectively for your services. Think about it— when you’re shopping, don’t you love it when prices are clear? Your clients feel the same way. They can budget smartly, dodge those “surprise” costs, and waltz into their project with excitement, not anxiety.
Yeah, they sure will. However, the focus remains on your target audience—those who recognize your expertise and the value you provide. If your pricing is an accurate reflection of your skills and the ROI your customers are experiencing, then your ideal client will continue to find you.
If your competition is intentionally undercutting your pricing in an attempt to lure your potential clients away, really focus on what separates your skills and offerings from theirs. Offer value in a way only you can provide, hone in on your brand and website strategies, and continue to follow your passion. Focus on what makes you unique and why you’re worth every penny.
Whether you have set prices or not, I am (and always will be) a supporter of including starting price points on your website, for all the reasons listed above. Including a starting price rather than a set price will allow you the flexibility to continue to create custom packages for your clients, without submitting them to an insane amount of sticker shock.
If you are going to include a starting price, but your quotes tend to vary widely, make sure that you are listing a price on the higher end. People would rather receive an invoice that is less than expected than an invoice thousands of dollars over their expected budget.
In the end, be you. Show your cards. Provide transparent pricing on websites. The digital world craves authenticity, and your straightforwardness will be a breath of fresh air.
